Okay, let’s do this~ I will warn you in advance, I’ll likely have multiple answers for each entry, since I’ve played a lot of Tales games PLUS it’s unlikely any one answer would suffice.

1. Favorite Tales game

(Wow, okay, shouldn’t this be at the end so your answers would build up to this or something? Talk about starting out with a difficult question…)

For the all-time nostalgic timeless favorite, I’d definitely pick Tales of Phantasia. It’s the first Tales game I played, and represents the kind of game I would’ve played 10 times through if it was localized back in the day. For a SNES RPG, it has a huge amount of content and depth, and the storyline has enough interesting things going on in it to differentiate it from the usual medieval-based RPGs of its day. Not to mention the eternally impressive vocal theme song and battle voices which were nearly unheard of in those days.

For the “Tales games released in English in a timely manner” category, I’d go with Tales of the Abyss. Although I mostly play Tales games for the character interactions/skits more than anything else, the storyline in this game was interesting and added a lot to the experience. I also enjoyed the cast. Guy was the only perma-benchwarmer in this game, so I actually had to juggle around party members to give everyone else a turn at the spotlight, which almost never happens in Tales games for me. It also has a ton of amazing music, some of which are among my all-time favorites from the series.

And finally, in the “recent Tales games” category, Tales of Xillia has been worth every penny spent importing it. I’m especially proud to play this one in Japanese due to the amazing voice cast, Sawashiro Miyuki and Tomokazu Sugita are among my favorite seiyuu and I couldn’t imagine their characters being voiced by anyone else. This game is also stunning graphically, has a lot of interesting new gameplay elements, and just feels fresh. I feel like the recently-announced sequel is entirely well-deserved.
